Heroine is the word that comes to mind as we publish this commemorative edition of Mi Gente Magazine in honor of the artist Frida Kahlo. She was a woman before her time that spoke her mind, and gave us an enduring legacy of art, culture and heroism. Her popularity continues to grow internationally and her tenacious spirit is one character trait we recognized in selecting our 2016 Spirit of Frida Award recipients. The Spirit of Frida Awards recognize the exemplary contributions of women in their field who through tenacity, wisdom, and strength became respected trailblazers—whose individual paths to excellence are inspiring and have made them important contributors and role models for their communities.
We’ve chosen extraordinary women throughout Michigan who have given of themselves—their time, energy, and voice—to enhance Hispanic causes. I would be remiss if I did not mention that all 20 nominations we received for this recognition were extraordinary. I’d like to thank all those who submitted an application, and those who helped us select the recipients. It was not easy.
